New report reveals how the city’s 20 most-reviewed birthing hospitals are performing, based on feedback from nearly 2,000 people
NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, October 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — New data from a recent safety assessment focused on New York hospitals’ maternity care and raises urgent questions about hospital accountability and how mothers are treated during childbirth. Irth’s NYC Hospital Safety Assessment and Birth Experience Report uncovered trends of disrespect and lack of consent.
Drawing on nearly 2,000 reviews, the report examines how New York City’s 20 most-reviewed birthing hospitals are performing across key safety and birth-experience domains. This is a first-of-its-kind, community-powered assessment of hospital performance based on the experiences of Black and Brown birthing people and New York City birth workers.
One key finding: Nearly 60% of participants experienced concerning behavior from hospital staff, which included condescending comments, dismissed pain, lack of eye contact, ignored or refused requests for help, and being forced to accept unwanted treatment.
“When I created Irth, I envisioned a two-pronged movement: families sharing their stories to help keep one another safe, and the data from those stories driving systems change,” said Kimberly Seals Allers, founder of Irth. “This report brings both sides of that vision to life.”
Other key findings from the safety assessment will be announced during an event on Friday, October 30 followed by a panel of women who will share their experiences and insights:
• Dr. Uche Blackstock, physician and NYT bestselling author
• Kimberly Seals Allers, founder of Irth and maternal health advocate
• Christy Turlington Burns, model, filmmaker, and founder of Every Mother Counts
• Naturi Naughton-Lewis, actress, Broadway star, and Irth celebrity ambassador
Event details: Friday, October 30, 2026 | 10:00 a.m. ET at Civic Hall, 124 East 14th Street, New York City. Media interviews will be available before and after the program, with advance scheduling encouraged.
