Danbury, Connecticut, USA – August 21, 2026 – A family history shaped by migration, cultural change, faith, hardship and community takes centre stage in An Abundant Life, in which Jean Abdelmaseh Mahassel draws on stories passed through her family, particularly those told by her mother about her grandmother. The narrative follows an immigrant family from Mount Lebanon into twentieth century America, exploring what is preserved, what changes and what later generations inherit.
At the centre of the story is Amelia, whose life moves from a childhood in which education is beyond her reach to a future in which she raises a large family, contributes to her church and community, manages money and eventually takes responsibility for property of her own. Her experience gives the narrative particular relevance to continuing conversations about immigration, women’s opportunity, cultural identity and the forms of knowledge that exist beyond formal education.
The family experiences prejudice and pressure to assimilate while working to become part of American society. At the same time, traditions survive through faith, food, family gatherings and relationships across generations.
